Assignment 5 - Appropriation (art)

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Rationale

Appropriation (art) is an act of borrowing pre-existing images from popular culture, advertising, mass media, social media, other artists and artworks, and contextualized new meaning to the new works of art. Often, the act of appropriation is intentional, may or may not attempt permission to their appropriated materials.

Task

Produce ONE appropriated picture to express your view:

Topic: choose any burning issue (social, cultural, political or economical, local or global)

Photomontage: apply various technique of digital photomontage (via Adobe Photoshop) to assemble your picture.

Use of pictures: minimum 3 pictures

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
photo A room, A laptop, An itouch, Alone.
Extra informations before I continue:
365days = 1 year
10.89m2 = size of my room
40075.16km = circumference of earth

Concept:
With the technologies we have now, creates a social problem/convenience.
One doesn't have to step out of his/her room anymore, just being in locked up in a room (self-prisoning sometimes) you are able to:
1. Become a celebrity through YouTube, MySpace etc.
(Pic of YouTube on Computer & me Singing @ Left)
2. Make as many "friends" as you want through Social Networking sites e.g. Facebook, Friendster etc.
(Pic of Facebook on iTouch & me playing it @ Center)
3. "Visit/Travel" around the world through googling/yahooing/reading other's blogs/'fly' across the planet with Google Earth
(Pic of Google Earth & me using the computer @ Right)

You do not even need to step out of your house anymore. One could practically live in his/her house for years (online shopping for food & essentials). Businesses could even be done online.

So does technology make the world seems smaller and brings people closer to us, or is it really the other way around?
(There's a bigger world out there...)

Technique:
I stand on one spot (center of my room) and started shooting 360degrees first towards the ceiling then eye-level lastly downwards.
After which I've pieced them altogether like jigsaw puzzle. (a lot of hard work trying to fit them in). *I intended to fit them into a circle...but the whole room only fits into a semi-circle:(
I've also used a tripod to take pictures of myself
Plus taking pictures of the different medias (computer & iTouch)

Critique:
Overall my classmates over the chat room could understand the message behind it. They also like the work, but here are some pointers to think about and to work on.
1. Make 360 degrees instead of 180
2. Show the closed door more obvious
3. Alone=negative?

In response to those above:
1. As stated the whole room could only fit into 180...but I will try to make a reflection or continuation or something to make it round.
2. And add an appropriated door image to the picture. (I'm thinking door with chains & locks)
3. ??? hahaa ermm we were discussing if the picture is meant to be positive or negative. My idea is to allow viewer to decide by themselves. The meaning behind could be a good or bad thing, but it's all up to you to think and decide what it really mean to you.
